Over the last few years The Arts Canvas has been developing and sharing their distinctive documentary storytelling technique. Used in their own work and through workshops, this technique takes participants’ experiences and creates original, vibrant performance pieces that incorporate dance, music, narrative and African storytelling art-forms.
Peace, Not Pieces is the name used to describe this original theatre training process. The techniques developed by The Arts Canvas have been used to give psychological healing to communities who have survived violence, loss and conflict throughout Kenya’s history and, in particular, during and after the Kenya’s contentious General Elections.
With the support of several international and local partners, The Arts Canvas has created work with communities in Kibera, Kariobangi, Dandora, Mathare, Kangemi and Huruma in Nairobi and further afield in Sotik, Kisii, Nakuru, Naivasha, Mombasa, Molo, Njoro, Ol Kalau and Mt Elgon. Our highly sensitive trainers work with communities in nine-day workshops that lead to performances and discussions that are shared with members of the public at trading centres.
